Coaching Staff



Dan Flannery, Head Coach

Coach Flannery is a graduate of Iowa State University with a BA in Spanish and will receive his Masters degree in Coaching in Physical Education from Ball State University in May of 2008. He was a member of the ISU Men's Swim team and captain for the 1998 season. He was a member of the Big 8 Championship team in 1995 and the undefeated team in 1998. Coach Flannery was a high school All-American in the 200 Freestyle and swam for Johnston High School in Des Moines. He has been head coach of the AHS Girls swim program since 2002, and the boys program since 1998. He and his wife Jodi have two boys, Joe (3) and Tommy (1).

Tyler Strodtman, Assistant Coach


Tyler was a two year letter winner and two year state alternate under Coach Flannery before graduating from Ames High in 2003. His favorite events were the 200 freestyle, 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. He is a 2007 graduate of Iowa State University with a BS in Psychology. Last fall was his first year helping the girls' team and he also assisted the boys' team in winter, as well as coaching ACAC and the Ames Golf and Country Club teams this summer.




Abby Van Maaren, Assistant Coach


Coach Abby is in her first year of coaching at Ames High. She was a member of the Little Cyclone swim team from 1997-2001. She attended the University of Iowa and competed on the swim team, graduating in December 2005 with a Liberal Arts degree double major in Health and Sports Studies. She previously coached for the Iowa City Eels swim club and was the Head Swim Coach for Cedar Rapids Prairie-Williamsburg swim team from 2005-06. She returns to Ames to attend DMAAC to get a certification in Surgical Technology.
